Editorial Methodology

What we list, how we classify and verify it, and what we do not claim.

Last updated 11 October 2026

We currently list 217 data science programs at 60 universities and record 150 related offerings we checked and did not list (certificates, minors, analytics or AI degrees without data science in the title), shown on each school page with the reason. Coverage is partial and growing; a program missing from the directory has not been verified yet.

Which programs are eligible

IncludedNot included
Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees whose awarded degree or official program title is data science (BS/BA in Data Science, MS in Data Science, Master of Data Science, Master of Applied Data Science, PhD in Data Science…)Certificates, minors, associate degrees, bootcamps, non-degree courses
Joint degrees that name data science with another field, where data science is central (Statistics and Data Science, Data Science and Analytics)Computer science or statistics degrees where data science is only electives or a topic
Specialized data science degrees (Health Data Science, Biomedical Data Science, Spatial Data Science)Business analytics, data analytics, AI or machine learning degrees without data science in the title or a named data science concentration
Related degrees with an officially named data science concentration — labelled separately and hidden from default resultsPrograms the university says are paused, closed to applications or discontinued

The awarded degree and the official program identity decide; the department name does not. We display the complete official title. When the evidence is ambiguous, a program goes to editorial review and is not published until an editor decides, with the reason recorded.

Program classification

  • Dedicated data science degree — the degree itself is data science.
  • Joint degree naming data science — one degree whose official title names data science together with another field.
  • Related degree with a data science concentration — for example a Computer Science MS with an official Data Science track. The awarded degree is the related field; these appear only when you choose to include concentrations, and never in our “Best” selections.

Delivery and attendance

Delivery is one of: on campus, fully online, online with required in-person attendance, or hybrid. “Fully online” is shown with a verified badge only when the university's own wording supports that no in-person attendance is required and no required orientation, immersion, residency, proctored exam or on-site presentation is recorded. An online program that does not publish its attendance rules never receives the badge. Study intensity (full-time, part-time, both) and class schedule (synchronous, asynchronous) are separate facts, shown only when published.

A university's location is not a student's eligibility to enroll. Online programs listed under a state are offered by universities based there; published enrollment restrictions (state authorization) are recorded separately.

Bachelor's entry routes

For bachelor's programs we record first-year entry, transfer entry, degree completion and second-bachelor's routes — each only from explicit official wording. A degree-completion program is never presented as a first-year option.

Tuition

Tuition is recorded exactly as published: amount in USD, basis (per credit, per term, per semester, per academic year or whole program), student category (resident, nonresident, online, international or all students), academic year when printed, and whether it comes from the program's own page or a university-wide table. Figures on different bases are never compared to call one program cheaper. An estimated total tuition is calculated only as published per-credit rate × published required credits (or taken from a published whole-program figure), on one consistent residency basis, with fees excluded — see the affordable online master's page for the method. Missing tuition is shown as not published, never as zero.

Deadlines

Each deadline belongs to an intake with its year (for example Fall 2027) and, where the university distinguishes them, to domestic or international applicants. A date is stored as a date only when the year is printed with it; otherwise the printed wording is shown. Past deadlines are marked as passed and are never rolled forward into a new cycle. Rolling admission is shown only when the university says so.

Admissions and tests

Requirements are shown with their published status — required, optional, recommended, not required or waived — including mathematics, statistics and programming prerequisites. Missing GRE information is shown as not verified; it never means “no GRE”. We do not publish acceptance rates or estimate admission chances.

Funding

Funding has a classification backed by sourced facts: guaranteed (tuition coverage and a stipend for every admitted student), conditional (the same, subject to published conditions such as satisfactory progress), competitive full (full packages for selected students), tuition only, partial, or not verified. A proposed classification that is not supported by verified quotes is downgraded to not verified. That assistantships exist does not establish guaranteed funding, and a competitive award is never presented as guaranteed. Loans are never shown as scholarships.

Sources and verification

Every fact carries the URL of the university page it came from and a verbatim quote. Before publication a script re-fetches each page and searches for the quote; a fact whose quote is not found is stored but never shown. Only the university's own domains count as official sources — never another directory, ranking or lead-generation site. Institutional identity comes from IPEDS (U.S. Department of Education) and institutional accreditation from DAPIP. Details on the data sources page.

Pages behind bot protection are not bypassed; when an official page cannot be read, the fact stays unverified and the gap is recorded. Each profile shows its last verification date. Deadlines and tuition older than their academic year are flagged for review rather than silently kept.

Independence and advertising

Listing is free. Paid placements are labelled “Sponsored”, appear in their own section, and only where the sponsored program already matches the page's results. Sponsorship never changes what we list, how a program is described, its verified status, or our editorial selections. See the sponsorship disclosure and the rankings methodology.

What we do not claim

  • No salaries, job-placement or graduation rates for programs, and no implied graduate outcomes.
  • No student reviews, ratings or testimonials.
  • No partnerships with the universities listed, and no application processing.
  • No guarantee that a program will admit you, fund you, or enroll students from your state.
