Thesis vs. Capstone in a Data Science Master's
What a master's thesis and a capstone project involve in data science programs, who each route suits, and how to read the way programs publish their culminating requirements.
Updated October 11, 2026 · Data Science Degrees editorial team
Most data science master's programs end with some kind of culminating requirement. Some require a capstone project, some offer a thesis, many let you choose between the two, and a few use something else entirely, such as a comprehensive exam. The route you pick affects how long you spend on one piece of work, who supervises it and what you have to show at the end. In our directory (October 2026), 106 of the 217 programs we list across all levels have a capstone or project recorded in their verified requirements, while only 14 have a thesis entry at all, and some of those entries record that no thesis is offered (how we count).
What a capstone involves
A capstone is usually an applied project completed in a single course or term, often in a team and often for an outside organization. Northwestern's School of Professional Studies describes it as "a practical or real-world project that can emphasize preparation for professional practice" and notes that capstone sections are a one-term commitment, with some sections running individual projects and others team projects.
Published examples show how varied the format is:
- Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers a 3-credit Graduate Qualifying Project carried out with a sponsor or industrial partner and overseen by a faculty member in the Data Science Program.
- Old Dominion University lists a capstone option made up of DASC 690 Data Science Capstone Project (3 credits) plus a 3-credit elective.
- Harvard's master's in data science fulfills its research experience requirement through AC 297r, listed as the Capstone Project.
What a thesis involves
A thesis is an individual research project supervised by a faculty adviser. It usually takes longer, needs a proposal before you start and ends with a written document that a committee reviews, often with an oral defense or presentation.
- Northwestern SPS says a thesis "usually takes two to four terms to complete." You can enroll in MSDS 590 Thesis only with an approved proposal, an identified adviser and the required paperwork in place at least two weeks before the term starts.
- Harvard thesis students spend most of their second year on a project that ends with submitting and orally defending the thesis. They replace the Capstone and two electives with thesis research (AC 302).
- UC San Diego's MS in Data Science calls its thesis route Plan I, with 8 to 12 units of DSC 299 Thesis Research. Plan II replaces the thesis with a course-based comprehensive examination.
- Northwestern's MS in Statistics and Data Science has a thesis track that requires a thesis and a 30-minute public presentation.
- Texas A&M's MS in Statistical Data Science has thesis and non-thesis options. For thesis-option master's degrees, the catalog requires at least one advisory committee member from an academic unit outside your department.
How the credits trade off
When a program offers both routes, the thesis usually takes up more of your total credits, which leaves room for fewer electives. Several programs publish the split directly:
| Program | Non-thesis route | Thesis route |
|---|---|---|
| WPI, MS in Data Science (30 credits) | 3-credit Graduate Qualifying Project | 9-credit M.S. thesis |
| Old Dominion, M.S. | 3-credit capstone plus 3-credit elective | 6-credit thesis (DASC 699) |
| Stony Brook, MS in Data Science | 3 credits of AMS 585, Internship in Data Science | 6 credits of AMS 585 as a thesis with a faculty mentor |
| UNC Charlotte, M.S. in Data Science and Business Analytics | 3-credit internship | 6-credit thesis, with research over at least two semesters |
| NJIT, M.S. in Data Science | 30 course credits, or 27 plus a 3-credit MS project | 24 course credits plus the MS project and a 3-credit MS thesis |
Note that the non-thesis route isn't always a capstone. At Stony Brook and UNC Charlotte the alternative is an internship, and at UC San Diego it's an exam. Read what the alternative actually is before assuming you'll do a project either way.
Who each route suits
Northwestern SPS publishes a short checklist that fits most programs. It says a capstone may suit you better if you don't need research and publication experience, want more input from classmates and instructors, want the structure of assignment deadlines, and want to finish on time. A thesis may suit you better if you are thinking about a PhD or another advanced degree, want to work one-on-one with a specific faculty member, are self-directed, and have a project that needs more time.
In practice:
- Choose a capstone if your goal is industry work and you want a finished, explainable project, ideally with a real client, plus experience working on a team under deadlines.
- Choose a thesis if you're considering doctoral study or research roles, already have a question you care about, and have found a faculty member willing to supervise it. Some doctoral programs build the thesis into their own route. WPI, for example, states that students entering its PhD in Data Science with only a bachelor's degree "first complete the M.S. in data science at WPI using the M.S. Thesis option." If a PhD is on your horizon, see Choosing a Data Science PhD and the doctoral programs we list.
A thesis isn't a shortcut into a PhD, and a capstone doesn't rule one out. Admission decisions rest with each program.
Programs where you don't get a choice
Many programs settle the question for you, so check before you apply rather than after:
- Texas A&M's MS in Data Science catalog states: "This program does not offer a thesis option."
- Carnegie Mellon's MS in Applied Data Science states: "There is no thesis requirement for our program."
- Boston University's residential MS in Data Science makes the thesis optional. It is carried out with the approval, and under the supervision, of a faculty member.
- The University of Arizona's MS in Statistics & Data Science requires either a thesis or a qualifying exam score of MS Pass or PhD Pass.
If a thesis matters to you, an "optional" thesis that depends on faculty approval isn't the same as a guaranteed thesis track. Ask how many students complete one and how advisers are matched.
How to read what programs publish
The marketing page often says only "capstone or thesis." The catalog or degree-requirements page usually gives the detail you need. Look for:
- Course numbers and credit values (for example DSC 299 or MSDS 590), which tell you how much of the degree the requirement takes up.
- Prerequisites for starting a thesis, such as an approved proposal, a named adviser or a committee, and the deadlines for each.
- Who the capstone is for. Is it team or individual, sponsored by an outside organization or set by the instructor, one term or longer?
- What the non-thesis alternative is. It could be a project, an internship, extra coursework or an exam.
- Timing. A thesis that runs over two to four terms can extend your time to degree if you start it late.
Our master's program listings show the culminating requirement wherever a program publishes it. You can compare programs side by side to see which ones offer both routes.
